Chimfunshi Volunteers

The Chimfunshi Wildlife Orphanage recently reached an agreement with African Impact to coordinate its volunteer program, offering supporters around the world the opportunity to assist with the care and feeding of orphaned chimpanzees at the sanctuary in central Zambia.

African Impact is a South African-based company that was founded in 2004 and currently manages volunteer programs throughout the continent. Its wildlife projects include black rhino and elephant conservation in Zimbabwe, lemur research in Madagascar, cheetah rehabilitation in South Africa, and big cat rehabilitation in Namibia, among others.

African Impact is a finalist in both the World Travel Awards and the British Youth Travel Awards in 2009.

“This is an important step forward for the long-term stability and success of Chimfunshi,” said Doug Cress, a member of the Chimfunshi board of trustees. “Volunteers play such an important role in not only the day-to-day operations of a sanctuary, but also by serving ambassadors for a project.”

At Chimfunshi, volunteers tasks will include food preparation for chimpanzees and monkeys, cleaning cages, fence maintenance, care and feeding of birds, tortoises, antelope and other animals at the orphanage, and grounds upkeep, among others. Prices start at USD $1,619 / GBP £899 for a minimum two-week stay.

A portion of the funds raised through the African Impact volunteer program will go to offset the cost of operating the Chimfunshi Wildlife Orphanage.
